made formal complaint to Met over former minister's expense claims
Police are to launch an investigation into the expenses claims of former
cabinet minister David Laws, a Labour MP has said.
Thomas Docherty made a formal complaint to the Metropolitan police last week
over Laws's expenses, and on Wednesday said the police had informed him they
would be carrying out an investigation.
A spokesman for the Met declined to confirm whether an investigation has been
opened into the Yeovil MP, who was suspended from the House of Commons for
seven days after being found guilty of breaching expenses rules by claiming
rent which he paid to his partner.
A Lib Dem spokesman said: "We are aware a complaint has been made to police
and so we imagine the police are probably looking into his case. However, no
one in David's office nor his lawyers are aware that any formal complaint has
been begun.
"Bear in mind that the parliamentary commissioner's report showed there had
been a serious breach of the rules, but concluded there had been no attempt to
gain."
