Oprah Winfrey, the most successful personality in television history, launched her national show at Chicago's WLS-TV 25 years ago. In 2004, Oprah donated the famous stage door from her set to the Museum of Broadcast Communications for "safe keeping" while her set was being remodeled. As a way of saying "thank you and good luck" to Winfrey, the MBC is placing the famous Oprah Door on display in its new lobby starting at Noon tomorrow. The door will be on display to the public free of charge. Visitors will be allowed to take pictures in front of the Oprah Door and leave a "Good Luck" note for the television icon as she moves on to run her new cable/satellite network, OWN.
Fans can only see this display for a very limited time, however. The door will be in the MBC lobby only from Noon-5:00pm, Monday-Friday, from May 17th until July 15th.
Bruce DuMont, MBC's President, CEO and Founder said today: "If you want to feel like a celebrity and walk in Oprah's footsteps - take a walk through the Oprah Door and be sure to offer your farewell Congratulations and Thank You for 25 years of historic broadcasting. Share the experience, bring your camera and join fans everywhere in wishing Oprah the best!"
The new Museum of Broadcast Communications location is at 360 N. State Street (at Kinzie) in Chicago. The museum itself is still closed to the public as it finishes interior construction on the 62,000-square-foot facility. The new museum is now expected to be completed and open to the public in early 2012.
