eBay unveils redesign, deals site and launches same-day delivery

eBay unveils redesign, deals site and launches sameday delivery

After eBay finally straightened out its logo and became ebay (it'll always be camel-cased in our hearts) it seemed only logical that the site itself would get a long overdue facelift too. At a press event today in NYC the tenacious dot-com holdover unveiled the most dramatic redesign of its long and storied existence. The look has been compared, repeatedly in the media, to Pinterest with its endless, uneven grid of product boxes and curated feed of auctions. The design is cleaner, with less text and better suited to scale for mobile and the upcoming onslaught of touchscreens. You can also like auctions on Facebook, which it hopes will drive more traffic to the site. The company quietly launched eBay Lifestyle Deals as well, a local coupon service in the vein of Groupon and Google Offers. Right now the deals are only available in a few major cities, including Washington DC, San Francisco and LA. SF is also the beneficiary of eBay Now, the same-day delivery service that entered beta testing in early August. There isn't an immediate expansion to accompany the end of the trial, but more cities should be added soon. If you're not seeing the new design yet, look for the "Feeds" option on the home page to switch over now.

Why The Gender Pay Gap Persists - Careers Articles - AOL Jobs

gender wage gap

It seems like every other week there is another study examining the persistent wage gap between male and female workers in America. Female workers still earn, on average, 77 percent of what men earn for the exact same work in a year, a stat that has remained unchanged since 2005, according to the U.S. Census. And on-the-ground evidence only furthers the case; just this week, two young college grads working as paralegals in New York City told Business Insider that the male makes 15 percent more than the female, and has an office, while the female works from a cubicle.

But what causes the gap? Is it because of choices that women make -- or just good-old-fashioned sex discrimination? Or another reason altogether?

A New Study Offers A New View: Women Work Differently

A new study by the Federal Reserve of St. Louis caused an uproar last week when it argued that the gap between men and women is in fact much lower than is widely reported. For starters, the study says, widely reported figures don't account for varying work habits between the genders.

So, for instance, when looking at median weekly earnings, which the study notes reached a low of a 16.5 percent pay gap last year, it's important to note that such analysis might be incomplete, given that "women are likely to work fewer hours than men." As a result, the study notes, the appearance of a gap may not represent a reality in which hourly wages are in fact the same.

Women Aren't Motivated By High Salary, Study Claims

Beyond the argument about hourly earnings versus weekly earnings, the St. Louis paper also argues for a reassessment of the role of men in higher paying-professions. The higher concentration of men in higher ranks "may be skewing the data," in the words of a report by The Wall Street Journal.

And men and women often enter the workplace with different expectations, the authors note. After having children, many women who seek employment are more motivated by the attainment of benefits -- like flexible scheduling or insurance -- than a high salary. So when accounting for total compensation, including both wages and benefits, the gap in weekly pay shrunk to 3.5 percent, according to the study.

Not So Fast

Just days before, Evergreen State College historian and noted author Stephanie Coontz wrote an op-ed in The New York Times blasting a series of recent books, such as "The End of Men," which argue that men are on the decline. Those who argue that women are ascending, while men are declining in both the workplace and society, "exaggerate" gains that have been made. Sure, Coontz concedes, things are no doubt better than when husbands could legally rape their wives in their homes. But if there was true equality, "why do women make up only 17 percent of Congress?" she asked in her essay, entitled, "The Myth of Male Decline."

Here are some more data points:

  • Women make up 40 percent of full-time workers in management.
  • Only 4 percent of the CEOs in Fortune's top 1,000 companies are female.
  • In some metro areas, never-married childless women in their 20s earn more than their male counterparts.

Coontz notes that this last trend is "an anomaly," due to the fact that there are many highly educated single white women in cities -- and lots of poorly educated, low-wage Latino men.

What's the path to parity? For Coontz, it would help if men and women both work to shatter the "masculine mystique," so that the culture evolves into one in which men can "liberate themselves from the pressure to prove their masculinity."

In The Eye Of The Discriminated

Charged discussion about wage disparities and relations between the sexes can only be a healthy thing for America. But amid all the statistical analysis comes one last report that might provide some valuable insight into the state of things on gender parity in 2012. As real as inequality may be, and of course it can often be, it's important to keep in mind how large a role perception might be playing.

As was reported by USA Today, a recent survey of 400 economists by the American Economics Association found that 76 percent of women say faculty opportunities in the field favor men.

As for their male counterparts? Eighty percent say women are favored or the process is neutral.

Which do you think is right?

"Progress" on EADS-BAE merger as deadline nears

PARIS/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The boards of EADS and BAE Systems prepared to weigh the results of weeks of tough political negotiations over a $45 billion merger on Tuesday with momentum building for an extension to a Wednesday deadline for the deal.

Several sources briefed on the negotiations said France and Britain had narrowed differences over the wording of key guarantees on state shareholdings, raising the prospect that the companies will buy more time to complete the complex deal.

"There has been some progress," a source close to the talks said, asking not to be identified.

But a French government source said the country had not changed its official opposition to a 10 percent cap on its future shareholding in the group, which would be the world's largest aerospace and arms conglomerate with 220,000 employees.

Differences between Britain, France and Germany over state control, jobs and investment have threatened to derail the talks, which have also drawn criticism from a number of investors.

The companies say they cannot spell out the full benefits of the merger before completing negotiations over the shape of the company's capital and possible guarantees on investment.

EADS Chief Executive Tom Enders and BAE Systems Chief Executive Ian King were due to review the talks with their boards and make a decision on the merger, on which the two managers have staked their careers and industrial ambitions.

"Ian King and Tom Enders will discuss the situation later today and then decide, jointly with the respective company Boards, the way forward," EADS said in an emailed statement.

The companies have insisted they will only request an extension to the October 10 deadline set by UK regulators if there is meaningful progress at government level.

Britain and France have the power to veto the deal, which must also be approved by the United States and overcome political objections in Germany.

UNIONS ON STAND-BY

Core EADS shareholders Lagardere, the French media firm, and German car firm Daimler also have the right to veto a deal. Both have expressed unease about the terms but are not participating in board discussions to prevent a conflict of interest, according to a person familiar with the talks.

EADS has put its unions on stand-by for briefings on a possible deal in either one week or two weeks, union officials said, suggesting the companies would seek a far shorter extension that the maximum allowed 28 days. A scheduled European works council went ahead on Tuesday with no managers present.

British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said he hoped to meet his French, German and U.S. counterparts to discuss the proposed merger on the sidelines of a NATO meeting.

"We always knew that there was a crunch point this Wednesday and the company has to decide today whether it's going to ask the stock exchange for an extension of time or not," Hammond told reporters in Brussels.

Booming German IT Industry Attracting ... - Business Review India

BERLIN and NEW YORK, September 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Job seekers from currently struggling European economies are flocking to Germany's IT industry. Nearly 20 percent of German IT companies have seen a rise in applications from these countries in recent months, according to a new survey by BITKOM, the country's IT industry association. This is a welcome development, as over half of these companies have positions they are struggling to fill, a sign of the current IT boom in Germany. Germany Trade & Invest experts will be on hand at this year's Interop from October 1 - 5 in New York City to share the latest trends in the German IT industry.

"On one hand there is a growing start-up culture here that is embodied by Berlin: young, hip, and innovative. On the other hand, the established German Mittelstand is currently performing very well and able to invest in new technologies, especially cloud computing. These trends are creating chances for international companies to come to Germany," stated Achim Hartig, IT expert and Director of Investor Consulting at Germany Trade & Invest in Berlin.

Germany features the largest IT market in Europe, making up 20 percent of total European market volume. The German IT industry posted annual revenue of approximately EUR 137 billion in 2011, a figure expected to grow in coming years. Cloud computing is one of the most significant growth segments, with revenue expected to nearly quadruple from EUR 3.5 billion to EUR 13 billion per year by 2015.

"The same conditions that helped Germany build a strong class of internationally active small and medium businesses, namely a business-friendly environment and an infrastructure that enables connectivity from anywhere, are now turning the country into a hub for the next generation of businesses," continued Hartig.

Germany Trade & Invest is the foreign trade and inward investment promotion agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. The organization advises foreign companies looking to expand their business activities in the German market. It provides information on foreign trade to German companies that seek to enter foreign markets.

Shell hopeful on Arctic drilling despite setback

(AP) ? The stars lined up ? almost ? for Shell Oil to drill exploratory wells this year in waters off Alaska's north coast.

The Arctic Ocean was on record pace for low sea ice. The Obama administration gave a qualified green light to drilling. Two drill ships and a flotilla of support vessels were staged off prospects.

But as the roughly four-month open water season wound down, Shell announced last week it would limit drilling to "top-hole" work, the shallow but time-consuming preparation for an offshore well. The final straw for the decision: damage during testing Sept. 15 to an undersea containment dome, part of a spill response system that Shell put in place to reassure federal regulators that Arctic offshore drilling could be done safely.

Environmentalists cheered the setback.

Shell Oil President Marvin Odum says he considers it a temporary impediment in the long-term quest to open a petroleum frontier.

"I think you can hear the enthusiasm in my voice, both for what's been accomplished this year and what we will do moving into 2013," he said after the decision.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC has spent $4.5 billion on Arctic offshore drilling, moving ahead in fits and spurts to overcome delays from court challenges and the added scrutiny that followed BP's Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico.

Odum said glitches were expected and the payoff from significant resources in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas will make the trouble worthwhile.

"If they prove up the way we hope they will, and the way the U.S. government thinks they may, then this will be very much worth all our time and effort," he said. "There is still great enthusiasm for that."

Shell officials have said they would wait for a report to be completed before releasing details of how the containment dome was damaged. Shell Alaska spokesman Curtis Smith said by email the company had no details to report Friday.

At stake are Arctic offshore reserves that could relieve U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

For the state of Alaska, which derives upward of 90 percent of its revenue from oil earnings, Arctic offshore oil could extend the usefulness of the 800-mile trans-Alaska pipeline, which operates at less than one-third capacity.

Critics of Shell and the Obama administration that OK'd preliminary work are not swayed. The Chukchi and the Beaufort are hundreds of miles from the nearest Coast Guard station. Roadless northern Alaska has a tiny fraction of the airport and harbor infrastructure that supported the Gulf of Mexico cleanup. Critics retain the same objections they stated when Shell spent $2.1 billion for Chukchi leases in 2008.

"We have been concerned all along about the lack of oil spill response capacity in the Arctic, and in Shell's outfit in particular, and the fact that they were given permission to go ahead and drill even before their response barge was ready to be launched was just rather shocking," said Margaret Williams, managing director for World Wildlife Fund's Arctic program.

Mother Nature and Shell's own errors conspired to slow things down this summer, she said.

"It's ancient, dilapidated response barge is still being fixed and tested," she said. "It's been one problem after another. It's just something the public should be really concerned about."

Shell says a blowout is unlikely in the relatively shallow Arctic waters and that its support fleet of more than 20 vessels could stop a leaking well. The company would first try pouring drilling mud down the hole. Its second defense is a blowout preventer, a device that mechanically seals a well. The third is a capping stack, which could be lowered from a staged Shell vessel to provide a metal-to-metal seal on a malfunctioning blowout preventer. Such a capping stack was modeled after the one that stopped BP's Deepwater Horizon blowout in the gulf of Mexico, said Shell Alaska spokesman Smith.

The containment system, which includes the dome damaged Sept. 15 off Bellingham, Wash., is the fourth line of defense. The dome is 15 feet square, 17 feet tall and 65,000 pounds. In a spill, Shell would hover the dome over a compromised well and funnel escaping oil, natural gas and water to a surface vessel, according to the company.

Odum expects Shell to work through the dome setback and send the containment system north this year.

"It's important to remember that this is a first of its kind system," Odum said. "This did not exist before our decision to put this together for the Arctic program."

The work in 2012 will be significant, Smith said. Depending on weather over the next weeks, Shell's two rigs could drill multiple top holes, a step that accounts for about half the time it takes to drill a well to total depth, Smith said.

"All of the drilling we complete this year will position us nicely for 2013," he said.

Cricket-South Africa eye early spin option against Australia

COLOMBO, Sept 29 | Sat Sep 29, 2012 5:29pm BST

COLOMBO, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Switching to spinners in the power play will not be a bad gameplan against Australia on a turning wicket, South Africa captain A.B. de Villiers said ahead of their World Twenty20 Super Eight clash on Sunday.

South Africa are in a must-win situation to keep their hopes for a semi-final berth alive after they lost a hard-fought game to Pakistan by two wickets on Friday.

Left arm spinner Robin Peterson struck with two wickets when de Villiers brought him on in the fourth over of the match against Pakistan.

"It worked really well for us and it's definitely a different approach and we haven't been doing it in the past," de Villiers told reporters ahead of the Colombo match.

"It's a very positive thing for us to bowl spinners in the first six overs and then we have seen the results come through like that.

"It is something to look at specially on this kind of wickets if it's turning a bit. Against the Australians, it's not a bad game plan."

However, de Villiers still hopes his fast bowlers can also deliver with wickets.

"We won't forget our pacemen who are on top of the world. Still I hope they will come back and take wickets against the Australians," he said.

Australia are unbeaten in the tournament and captain George Bailey said they have got a buffer after winning Friday's game against India by nine wickets.

"I know it is a great win, but in terms of just where it has set this up in this tournament it has put South Africa under pressure because they know they need to win their next two. We have that buffer," Bailey told reporters.

"Our best cricket has always been very, very good. The challenge in Twenty20 has been that gap between our best and the worst cricket. That's been the pleasing thing for me as we have been consistent so far." (Writing by Shihar Aneez)
