Wonder headlines NYC concert highlighting poverty

(AP) ? Bono served as an opening act for Stevie Wonder.

The U2 frontman gave a funky, rousing introduction to Wonder, who headlined the Global Citizen Festival on New York's Central Park on Saturday. It was the second annual concert to help end poverty around the world.

Wonder performed a number of his hits, wowing the audience of thousands who danced and sang along to "Superstition" and "Isn't She Lovely."

"This is a global celebration," Wonder yelled to the crowd. "We will end extreme world poverty in our lifetime."

Wonder has been a U.N. Messenger of Peace with a special focus on disabilities since 2009. Messengers have recognized talents in the arts, academia and sports and help bring attention to U.N. work.

The Global Citizen Festival coincides with the U.N. General Assembly. Fans earned free tickets for helping spread the word or volunteering to help end world poverty. Some world leaders attended, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

"There is so much energy here tonight. We can power the world," Ban told the crowd.

Will.i.am and Olivia Wilde were among the celebrity attendees.

Wonder ended the five-hour event, electrifying the crowd during his hourlong performance. He even teased concertgoers before singing "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours."

"That's it!" he yelled, then added: "Y'all wanna jam some more?"

John Mayer also performed Saturday and was a favorite with his solo work on the guitar. He was full of power when he performed "Slow Dancing In a Burning Room" and "Gravity."

"It's so nice to be here," he said.

Other performers included Kings of Leon and Alicia Keys, whose set included "No One" and "Empire State of Mind."

"I believe if we don't care about each other, who will?" the singer said. "Help me celebrate tonight so we never forget."

Wonder also had a touching moment when he sang John Lennon's "Imagine" and encouraged the audience to lobby for more gun laws.

"Can you believe blind people have guns?" he said. "Let's keep it real. Ridiculous."

Last year's Global Citizen Festival featured Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters and The Black Keys. The festival's nonprofit partners pledged $1.3 billion in new fundraising commitments last year.

Wonder, who played the piano and harmonica, was joined onstage by R&B singers Maxwell and Janelle Monae.

"I can't believe this is happening," Maxwell gushed when singing "Superstition."

Wagon-wheel pasta shape for better LED lights

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A problem developing more efficient organic LED light bulbs and displays is that much of the light is trapped within the light-emitting diode, or LED. Physicists believe they have solved the problem by creating a new organic molecule that is shaped like rotelle ? wagon-wheel pasta ? rather than spaghetti.

George H.W. Bush Is Witness At Same-Sex Wedding Of Friends

Former President Celebrates Friends' Marriage

George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara were among the guests last weekend at the marriage of two female friends in Maine. Bush, the nation's 41st president, was an official witness as well ? he signed the couple's marriage license.

Former President George H.W. Bush's presence as a witness and guest at the marriage of two women in Maine last weekend is being treated by some as his quiet endorsement of same-sex marriage.

For the record, The Associated Press writes, Bush spokesman Jim McGrath says only that the former president and his wife, Barbara Bush, attended the marriage of friends Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen as private citizens.

On her Facebook page, Thorgalsen posted a photo of the 89-year-old Bush signing the marriage license. "Getting our marriage license witnessed!" she wrote.

In an email to The Washington Post, Clement says the couple has known the Bushes for many years. The Post writes that:

" 'This is such a wonderful time for change in our legal system,' she added. 'Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgment of being real and normal.' Clement, 60, said she and Thorgalsen, 55, have been together for 12 years, during which she helped raise her new wife's now-adult daughters."

The AP reminds us that:

"Bush was in the White House when gay marriage wasn't as big a political issue as it is today. One of his sons, former President George W. Bush, opposed same-sex marriage and in 2004 announced his support for a proposed constitutional amendment to outlaw it. But [George W. Bush's] wife, Laura Bush, and their daughter Barbara Bush support gay marriage, as does [George W.Bush's] former vice president, Dick Cheney, whose daughter Mary Cheney is openly gay.

"A spokesman for George W. Bush on Wednesday declined to comment on his current feelings about same-sex marriage or his thoughts about his father's role in a same-sex wedding."

Same-sex marriages became legal in Maine, where the Bushes have a summer home, last December.

Apple's iPhone fingerprint technology defeated already?

A group of hackers in Germany claims to have already bypassed the fingerprint scanner on Apple Inc.'s new iPhone 5S by creating a copy of the user's fingerprint. CNet reports the Chaos Computer Club announced the news late Saturday, a day after the new phones were released.

The new Touch ID sensor replaces the four-digit code used to unlock the devices. Several websites had offered cash rewards to the first person to successfully beat the technology.

Chaos' process could hardly be described as easy, though. It involves taking a high-resolution photograph of the enrolled user's fingerprint left on a glass surface, cleaning up the image, laser printing on a transparent sheet, using latex or woodglue and finally one's own breath to create a replica suitable enough to fool the system.

Security system aside, the new phones are selling fast. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports it sold 9 million iPhone 5S and 5C models in the first three days after Friday's launch, shattering previous records and surpassing analysts' projections.

Jen Wilson coordinates the Charlotte Business Journal's online operations, chronicles local events for CBJ Seen and takes photographs.

Murray, Romo lead Cowboys to 31-7 rout of Rams

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? DeMarco Murray found the perfect antidote for his recent malaise: the St. Louis Rams.

Murray rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown two years after torching St. Louis with a franchise record as a rookie, and Tony Romo threw for three scores in a 31-7 victory Sunday.

Murray's first 100-yard game in more than a year started with a 14-yard run on Dallas' first offensive play, and he had plenty of open space on a 36-yarder to start Dallas' second drive to a 10-lead late in the first quarter.

Sam Bradford, Murray's old college teammate at Oklahoma, didn't have nearly as much room to operate.

The Cowboys (2-1) sacked him four times in the first half and had six in total after St. Louis (1-2) hadn't allowed a sack in four games dating to last season. It was the longest streak for the Rams since John Hadl was under center for a division champion in 1973.

Bradford still went 29 for 48 and was not intercepted.

DeMarcus Ware had two sacks and broke Harvey Martin's 30-year-old franchise record of 114.

The Rams, trying for their first 2-1 start since 2006, had just 18 yards total offense in the first half compared to 96 for Murray alone. The Cowboys had 202 yards before halftime.

Romo, who had 217 yards passing, went 2 yards to Dez Bryant for the first Dallas score. He had a pair of 24-yarders in the second half to rookie tight end Gavin Escobar and Dwayne Harris, who bounced back from a muff on the game's first punt.

When the Rams finally started getting defenders around Murray at the line of scrimmage, Romo found him on the outside for a pair of catches on a drive that ended with a 2-yard run by Murray for a 17-0 lead. Murray, who had 253 yards against the Rams in 2011, went around left end before extending the ball over the goal line right on the pylon, and there was no review. His last 100-yard game was the 2012 opener, and he was coming off a 25-yard performance in a loss at Kansas City.

St. Louis avoided the shutout on Bradford's 4-yard pass to Austin Pettis on fourth down late in third quarter after an interception by rookie safety J.J. Wilcox was wiped out by a roughing-the-passer penalty against Jason Hatcher.

The Rams had a chance to stay in the game on their next drive, but Bradford threw behind Chris Givens while Givens on fourth down. Dallas scored three plays later for a 31-7 lead when Romo hit Harris in stride in the back of the end zone.

Tavon Austin had an 84-yard punt return for a touchdown called back by a holding penalty. The Rams also were penalized for a blind-side block that laid out Dallas' Kyle Wilber, who stayed down for a few minutes before leaving the field on his own.

THE DOG

(Acquisition Title/Submarine)

Section: Motion Portraits

Directed by Alison Berg and Frank Kerauden

Coming of age in the 1960s, John Wojtowicz' libido was unrestrained even by the libertine standards of the era, with multiple wives and lovers, both women and men. In August 1972, he attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover's sex-reassignment surgery, resulting in a fourteen-hour hostage situation that was broadcast live on television. Three years later, John was portrayed by Al Pacino as ?Sonny,? and his crime immortalized in one of the most iconic New York movies of all time, Dog Day Afternoon. The film had a profound influence on Wojtowicz (who pronounced his name "Woto-wits"), and when he emerged from a six-year prison sentence, he was known by his self-imposed nickname: "The Dog."

Drawing upon extraordinary archival footage, the film shuffles between the 1970s and the 2000s. Touching upon the sexual revolution of the 1970s, we gain a first-hand perspective on New York's historical gay liberation movement in which Wojtowicz played an active role. In later footage, he remains a subversive force, backed by the unconditional love and headstrong wit of his mother Terry. The hows and whys of the bank robbery are recounted in gripping detail by Wojtowicz and various eyewitnesses, and don?t necessarily always align with one another.

Directors Allison Berg & Frank Keraudren began filming The Dog in 2002, and their long-term dedication pays off in this unforgettable portrait capturing all of the subject's complexity. John is, by turns, lovable, maniacal, heroic, and self-destructive. To call him larger than life feels like an understatement. Passionate and profane, The Dog makes no apologies for being who he is: "Live every day as if it's your last and whoever doesn't like it can go fuck themselves and a rubber duck."

The Dog recently screen at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Allison Berg was born in New York City. She received the Special Jury Award at 2004 SXSW for her debut feature documentary Witches in Exile. The Dog is her latest film.

Frank Keraudren studied film at New York University. He co-directed The Last Cigarette in 1999 and Who Wants To Be President? in 2000, and co-produced and edited Allison Berg's Witches in Exile. The Dog is his latest film.

EMPIRE

Section: Convergence

Directed by Eline Jongsma and Kel O?Neill

Empire is making its world premiere at NYFF 2013.

A hidden synagogue in the mountains of Indonesia. A Dutch-style village in the Sri Lankan rainforest. A white separatist enclave in the South African desert. These are just a few of the communities brought to light in Empire, an immersive documentary project that examines the still-unfolding legacy of Dutch colonialism.

Shot in ten countries over four years, Empire employs a broad range of storytelling techniques?including nonfiction filmmaking, multi-channel video projection, and experience design?to unearth the contemporary aftershocks of the world's first brush with global capitalism.

By turns epic and intimate in its approach, Empire explores the ways in which the conditions of past continue to define our lives in the present.

Empire's installations and interactive videos will be on display throughout NYFF at several venues on the Lincoln Center campus. Viewers are invited to chart their own course through the work, and to draw their own thematic connections as they go.

Eline Jongsma & Kel O?Neill are a married Dutch-American filmmaking team focused on cross-platform storytelling. They work as a two-person crew, and film, edit, research and produce all of their work by themselves. They spent 2010-2013 travelling more than 140,000 kilometers by car, boat and airplane through Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas while filming Empire. Before creating Empire, Eline and Kel were the US Correspondents for VPRO Television?s Prix Europa-winning documentary series ?Metropolis.? Their journalism work has appeared in the Huffington Post, Vice and The Creators Project. Their videos and installations have been presented by museums, galleries and festivals throughout the world, including: the Los Angeles Film Festival (LAFF); the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA); the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR); Apex Art, New York; Stevenson Gallery, Cape Town; Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta; Khoj, New Delhi; and CBK Zuidoost/Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA). Before they began working together, Eline worked as a fine art photographer, and Kel worked as an actor in independent film.

Press Release: "Kill Me Three Times" Final Cast Announced

KRIV STENDERS' 'KILL ME THREE TIMES' ANNOUNCES FINAL CASTING WITH SIMON PEGG, SULLIVAN STAPLETON, ALICE BRAGA, TERESA PALMER, BRYAN BROWN, CALLAN MULVEY AND LUKE HEMSWORTH SET TO START PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY BEGAN THIS WEEK

LOS ANGELES, CA (17 SEPTEMBER, 2013) - The final cast has been announced for KILL ME THREE TIMES the new crime thriller from Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, Boxing Day). Principal photography began this week in and around Perth and the southwest region of Western Australia. The film stars Simon Pegg, Sullivan Stapleton, Alice Braga, Teresa Palmer, Bryan Brown, Callan Mulvey and Luke Hemsworth. With an original screenplay by James McFarland, the film is produced by Laurence Malkin and Share Stallings (the team behind Death At A Funeral and A Few Best Men) and Tania Chambers, the former CEO of Screen New South Wales.

KILL ME THREE TIMES takes place in a sundrenched Australian surfing town, where a young singer, portrayed by Alice Braga, is the thread that binds three tales of murder, blackmail and revenge. Simon Pegg plays a mercurial assassin, who is hired by her wealthy husband (Callan Mulvey), but there is more than one person gunning for her. Sullivan Stapleton has been cast as a gambling addict that attempts to pay off his debts through a risky life insurance scam, whilst Teresa Palmer plays a small town Lady Macbeth who masterminds the scheme. Bryan Brown, a corrupt cop, also tries to get his cut and Luke Hemsworth portrays Braga's love interest, a local surfer who hopes to rescue the young woman from Pegg's telescopic sights.

Director Kriv Stenders said, "I am absolutely thrilled with the dream cast we've assembled. It's a real gift to have so many wonderfully talented and respected actors in one movie. I can't wait to begin collaborating with them and bring KILL ME THREE TIMES to vivid life."

"KILL ME THREE TIMES is a great script and the chance to work with Kriv Stenders in Perth made the whole thing an opportunity I did not want to miss out on," added Simon Pegg.

Sullivan Stapleton concluded, "I am a fan of this script and character, and look forward to coming home to Australia for this film."

"We've been searching for a film like Out of Sight, where flawed but human characters manipulate, murder and make love to each other in really fun and suspenseful ways," said Malkin. "James' script struck just the right chord, surrounding the emotional core with action, romance and dry humor. We're thrilled that Kriv and this impeccable cast are going to breath life into an immensely satisfying and universal story."

Cargo Entertainment handles international sales and WME is repping KILL ME THREE TIMES in North America. The film is financed by Screen Australia, ScreenWest, Jake Film Finance, Media House Capital and the Melbourne International Film Festival's MIFF Premiere Fund.Media House Capital's Aaron L. CBGB

U.S. Theatrical Premiere

Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police. Homestead Parade issues

To the Editor,

I think we had a wonderful Homestead parade. But there were two serious issues.

The junior football team was allowed to be on such a high semi bed, where they were not controlled and not made to stay seated. One could easily have fallen off the bed and been seriously hurt or killed. This needs to be addressed. Lots of people I talked to said this is a serious issue.

Then this guy with a black western hat, long black coat and two toy pistols came up to people in the parade and acted like he was going to shoot them. He should have never been allowed in the parade at all. There is too much killing. Look at the last couple of days, Sunday and Monday. What are we teaching kids if he does this? It made me ill to see him do this. This should be banned from any future parades.

I hope both issues are addressed for future Homestead parades.

India to finalise long-term debt infra policy in weeks

India will finalise a policy within two months to provide long-term debt for infrastructure projects, senior finance ministry official Arvind Mayaram said on Friday.

India needs to modernize creaking infrastructure to help pull the economy from a deep slowdown, but many projects have been held up by problems including a lack of financing.

PLANT print issue: Canada?s eroding auto industry

Without more investment, it will run out of gas.

North America's automotive market is becoming more competitive, but Canada's industry is showing some wear. ?Thinkstock

North America's automotive market is becoming more competitive, but Canada's industry is showing some wear. ?Thinkstock

There?s a troubling development in Canada?s automotive manufacturing sector that?s bringing into question the longer-term health of an industry that Canada (especially Ontario) depends on as a major contributor to overall economic health.

In June, industry analysts presenting at the Automotive Parts Manufacturer?s Association (APMA) conference in Windsor, Ont. pleasantly proclaimed it was ?a good time to be in the auto sector.?

Sure, auto sales are booming at record levels and parts manufacturers are working at capacity. Business has certainly picked up post-recession to levels that will sustain jobs and meagre growth in the short-term. But vehicle and parts manufacturing aren?t safe, nor is the sector sustainable in its present form, mostly because of Canada?s shrinking industry investment, which is quickly eroding Canada?s share of North American light vehicle production.

Across the entire industry, investment levels have dropped by more than 50%, according to a report by Richmond Hill, Ont.-based DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, and production is down as vehicle sales are rising.

Statistics Canada data compiled by DesRosiers shows that automakers invested just $767 million in Canada last year. That?s only 9% of the their investment between US and Canadian operations, and it?s the first time that number has been in the single digits since 1990. As recently as 2007, investment stood at 40%.

?This is the best recovery in the automotive sector in decades, and Canada, from a manufacturing perspective, isn?t participating,? auto analyst Dennis DesRosiers told the Globe and Mail in June.

The sector on a global scale is significantly healthier than it was a few years ago. The global vehicles sales outlook for 2013 is 85 million units, according to IRN Automotive, an industry research firm based in Grand Rapids, Mich. North American production will top 17.5 million units, of which Canada will be responsible for 2.5 million, while Mexico will build 3 million vehicles this year.

In Canada, vehicle parts manufacturers are expected to post pre-tax profits of $1.16 billion in 2013, down more than 16% from 2012 levels and production will edge up a meagre 0.1% due to weaker demand, according to the Conference Board of Canada. The ongoing shift to move vehicle assembly away from Ontario and the US Midwest will also continue to threaten the long-term growth and stability of Canada?s auto sector.

Light vehicle production, despite rebounding strongly after the recession, fell 7% during the first half of this year, which is a glaring contrast to gains seen by the US (6%) and Mexico (5%), according to a TD Economics note by economist Dina Ignjatovic.

?This puts Canada?s auto sector on track to record its largest annual decline outside a recessionary year going back to 1990,? she wrote in the Aug. 16 note.

Production is down at GM (-11.5%), Chrysler (-6.1%) and Toyota (-11.2%) over 2012. Only Ford (3.1%) and Honda (0.1%) increased production between January and June 2013. The result is Canada?s share of North American production stands at 14.6%, relative to a 16.6% average between 2000 to 2010, according to the TD report.

Toyota is the only automaker that has recently expanded capacity in Canada. Its Cambridge, Ont. assembly plant has produced 178,000 vehicles in 2012, and another investment of $134 million that brought the company?s Lexus RH350 h luxury SUV to the plant will increase capacity to 200,000 in 2013.

Pronunciation costs 'Wheel of Fortune' player

TV

It turns out that on game shows, both spelling and pronunciation matter a whole lot. "Wheel of Fortune" contestant Paul learned that the hard way on Tuesday's episode, the second of its 31st season.

After landing on the teensy million-dollar wedge, he attempted to solve the puzzle, which was "corner curio cabinet." The answer that came out of his mouth? "Corno curo cabinet."

Bzzzzz! Incorrect, ruled the show. No chance at that whopping $1 million prize for Paul!

"Well, it's one of those ... it just didn't come out the way you intended it to!" host Pat Sajak declared after the next player in line enunciated and pronounced the answer properly for the win. "Paul, you've proved what several players have proven and I prove almost on a nightly basis: Sometimes your mouth says what your brain doesn't intend for it to," he later joked.

Paul, though initially flabbergasted by not having his answer approved, had a good attitude about the situation, later enunciating the word "corner" to prove he can speak English, and slowly and accurately pronouncing a later answer to solve a puzzle.

"You just have to say words, actual words, Pat!" he laughed.

Even if the powers that be behind "Wheel" had cut the man some slack and given him the win on the "curio" puzzle, it would've been really tough for Paul to even make it to the bonus round without landing on "Bankrupt," and then spinning the special bonus-round wheel to land on the $1 million envelope. That's because fellow player Luis ended up with more than $30,000 in prizes to move on to the final round, while Paul had a relatively puny $2,000.

(Sony Pictures Television, which produces the game show, declined to comment.)

In August, young Thomas Hurley had his loss sealed during Kids Week on "Jeopardy!" when he misspelled "emancipation" in the final round. But unlike Paul, the young man wasn't quite as gracious in his unavoidable loss. Rather than taking the defeat like a champ, the young man later said in an interview that he "was cheated" for "just a spelling error."

So take note, game-show hopefuls: Practice your enunciating and spelling before testing your skill on national TV.
