Police Seek Bird Burglars Who Stole Man's 500 Canaries ? CBS ...

MIAMI (CBSMiami) ? An 87-year-old Miami man is heartbroken after the 20-year relationship he shared with his 500 beloved canaries was severed by robbers.

Manuel Sanchez said he was robbed on May 26th. According to a news release, the robbers entered through the west-side window of Sanchez?s shed, stole the birds, then sold them to three different pet shops?the following day.

Sanchez has had limited luck recovering his canary companions: his visits to the pet shops, which include Animal Pet Shop on SW 40th Street and Pet Lover Supply on SW 56th Street, enabled Sanchez to recover 150 of the 500 birds.

According to Alvaro Zabaleta of Miami-Dade police, one of the pet store owners said he sold all the canaries.

That comes as no surprise to Sanchez, who said canaries can be sold for $20 to $30 each. With 500 birds, that?s $15,000.

The canary caper was caught on camera by surveillance video from Roberts Pet Store at 14420 South Dixie Highway.

Anyone with tips is asked to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305)471-8477 (TIPS).
