Almost 80 percent of businesses operating warehouse facilities in the Melbourne suburbs of Footscray and Laverton are complying with workplace laws, random audits by the Fair Work Ombudsman have revealed.
Fair Work inspectors checked the books of 56 employers across the two suburbs, and with 49 audits finalised, have found that 38 of the businesses (78 per cent) are meeting their workplace obligations.
Contraventions were identified at 11 premises (22 per cent), five relating to the underpayment of wages and six in relation to payslips.
A total of $54,200 has been recovered for 51 employees who were underpaid.
Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson says inspectors have worked with each of the employers to voluntarily rectify their breaches and put processes in place to ensure they do not re-occur.
Seven businesses remain under investigation.
Mr Wilson says the high compliance rate is encouraging.
