Music Review:The Lonely Island - Turtleneck & Chain - seattlepi.com

The Lonely Island is one of the most ridiculous, random, hilarious hip hop groups to hit the scene since, well, ever! The self deprecating, outrageous group's goal is to just to make us laugh at their insanely funny, yet so inappropriate music. Who is The Lonely Island you ask? Have you ever viewed Saturday Night Live and stopped to watch a Digital Short starring Andy Samberg and "those other guys" (aka Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone)? Well, that's them! They are the creators of "Dick in a Box" and "I'm on a Boat." The guys have landed some of the most sought after acts in music today like Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Nicki Minaj, and are back with their second album, Turtleneck & Chain.

The Lonely Island is back so of course the first song off the album is "We're Back," which you would think is about the group coming out with new music. Nope, it's about their genitals! "Mama" just makes me laugh. The guys make an ode to their moms, and the song starts off innocent enough until their mom interrupts the song and the guys get upset! And they go crazy on her, cursing at her and calling her names.

And then there are the collaborations, "I Just Had Sex," featuring Akon, has a really catchy beat, but as you hear the hook you start to feel like this song is off. They are boasting about just having had sex, but even the guys are surprised that the ladies let them have sex with them. "I cried the whole time" and "she put a bag on my head, " are just some of the lyrics. "Jack Sparrow" features Michael Bolton and the song has nothing to do with anything. The Lonely Island throws down their best rap about going to a club and Bolton sings a hook about The Pirates of the Caribbean. Random! "Turtleneck & Chain" featuring Snoop Dog has them singing about just that, an obvious attempt to mock other hip hop songs. Usually someone would sing about how fat their chains are or what hard liquor they are drinking, but not The Lonely Island--they are boasting about their thin chains and light beer! "Metal so thin is dissolves when it rains."

"Shy Ronnie" features Rihanna. This song is hilarious as Samberg sings really low because he is shy. Rihanna has to struggle to get him to sing louder. The minute that Rihanna leaves "Shy Ronnie" comes to life and actually starts rapping. When Rihanna returns again Ronnie goes back to whispering. "Motherlover" featuring Justin Timberlake continues with their outrageous mocking. Justin and Andy decide to switch mothers since they forgot Mother's Day and they will have sex with each other's mothers. Justin adds his classic R&B swagger to the song.

"I Threw It On The Ground" is so silly. When someone hands Samberg an energy drink, a hot dog, cell phone, and cake, he throws it on the ground for no real reason--just because. "No Homo" is about complimenting your friend without coming off like you like him. Nothing is off limits. "Reba" ends the album with a fake Reba McEntire (Kenan Thompson). Samberg and the "fake Reba" have a love connection, butSamberg doesn't realize that "Reba" is actually a man with a wig.

The Lonely Island reminds me of music from Weird Al Yankovic, but with all new, crude, original music! A lot of the songs above have videos that have been featured on SNL on the Digital Shorts. Check them out, so funny!
